Klipdrift Premium has been named 2016’s World’s Best Brandy at the World Brandy Awards.
Devotees of a regular ‘Klippies and coke’ might not recognise the World Brandy Awards panel’s description of Klipdrift Premium’s “aromas of milk chocolate, sponge cake and caramel”, “gentle woodiness” and “a sweet, fruity finish”, but most will agree that “there is indeed gold in every drop of Klipdrift”, in the words of marketing manager Genius Mnywabe.
Klipdrift, which is based in Robertson in the Western Cape, makes three brandies. Klipdrift Export, a blended brandy, is designed to be enjoyed with a mixer (as above), and Premium and Gold, which are both potstill brandies, and usually served neat or over ice … to let those aromas (milk chocolate, sponge cake and caramel) come through.
This award is just the latest in a string of international accolades won by Klipdrift proprietor Distell in the last year, including the International Wine & Spirit Competition’s Distiller of the Year award and Best Worldwide Brandy trophy for the Van Ryn’s 12-year-old potstill produced according to the traditional technique made famous in Cognac.
